Château Pontet-Canet 2019 stands as a fascinating and bold expression of Pauillac, crafted by a producer world-renowned for its pioneering biodynamic viticulture. As the first major Médoc estate to achieve full organic and biodynamic certification, the Tesseron family has redefined modern winemaking with a "hands-off" philosophy. This involves the famous use of horses in the vineyards to prevent soil compaction and the use of bespoke concrete amphorae—lined with soil from the estate's own vineyards—for aging to preserve the energy and purity of the fruit.
The 2019 vintage across the Left Bank was excellent, with Wine Spectator rating the overall year a 93 for its focus and structured character. This specific wine is a masterfully balanced blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.
The critical reception for the 2019 has sparked significant conversation among connoisseurs. James Suckling awarded it a near-perfect 99 points for its purity and "endless length," while Jane Anson scored it a 98, praising its precision. While The Wine Advocate settled on a 93, noting its unique and polarizing style, Wine Enthusiast remains high on the vintage with a 98-point rating.
On the palate, it offers an exotic array of crème de cassis, wild plum, and licorice, backed by silk-like tannins and remarkable freshness. This is a wine for those who appreciate the evolution of Bordeaux toward a more transparent, terroir-driven style. Its ideal drinking window is between 2027 and 2055, making it a singular, future-proof addition to any modern cellar.
